Abstract: It doesn't get much more outlandish than this mid-century modern style home in Barre, Vermont. Unforgettably, it's even surrounded by a moat and waterfall.

The four-bedroom home recently hit the market with a bang, and the price has dropped $20,000 to $880,000.

The property last changed hands in 2020 for $349,500, according to the Realtor.com® website.

The 2,908-square-foot home was designed by self-taught architect Donald McKnight and blends mid-century, Bauhaus and modern styles. He worked on a number of local projects at Norwich University in Northfield, Virginia, and at North Barre Manor, which is the town's tallest building. McKnight died in 2020 at the age of 87.

"The house was designed, built and lived in by architect Don McKnight," said Lori Peever, who owns the house with partner Kristin Michaud. He's a big fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, and there's even a stained-glass window paying homage to him.

In keeping with the mid-century design, the home boasts "clean lines, a minimalist aesthetic and a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces."

Pifer says, "We're downsizing because we only live on one side of the house." There's an in-law suite on the left side and an entire house on the right.

Back in 2020, when she and Michaud were in the market for a house, they were looking for something different.

"We wanted something unique," Peever said. The house was built in 1981, so we updated a lot of things to bring it up to date for this century, but kept the teak furniture. The bathrooms and kitchen were also updated. We redid the entire exterior. ...... This is a very beautiful home.

Of course, the waterfall and moat at the front of the property are a great talking point. There is a small bridge over the water connecting the home to the garage and driveway. There are also several patios that are perfect for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors.

Peever shares, "The waterfall has been a big hit since we put the house on the market." You can easily adjust the water level of the waterfall. Just take the boards out and the water level will reach the ground. It's set up like a dam.

She believes the unique property will appeal to a diverse range of buyers.

I think it will be a great option for families with teenagers who don't need to live above their parents, she said. It could also be an older couple who are looking for a different lifestyle," she says. It's a very private home, so it could also be someone who is looking for privacy. You won't find another home like it [in] Barre."
